I guess it's clear they don't watch the games

When we first started talking about this blog, I felt strongly that it should not just be about Georgetown basketball, and I maintain that. That said, I couldn't let this one slide. And rather than take the homer "Go Hoyas" banner, I'm going the other way and trashing the national media for its bias in favor our storied program.

In short, I guess it's clear that the voters for neither the AP nor the coaches poll are watching the games. It's a joke that Georgetown actually moved up both rankings after the week that the Hoyas had, eeking out two wins against mediocre (at best) teams (including the questionable no-goaltending call to end the WVU game). If nothing else, you would have expected all the voters to have seen the Ewing highlight and realized how close we came to losing... again.

Georgetown seems to clearly be the best team in the Big East (one game lead on Notre Dame, who we destroyed in our only recent quality win), and maybe being the best team in the Big East means you automatically are one of the 6 or 7 best teams in the country, but as a fan of the Hoyas I'm starting to feel pretty nervous about AT Louisville and AT Syracuse in a one-week span (starting a week from Saturday -- both games on ESPN). I don't see anybody coming out of the Big East with fewer than 4 conference losses, so maybe it's better to dump those on the road than put up a bad show in the home finale against Louisville.

1) Patrick Ewing goal-tended against WVU...the ball began to drop, but I liked the ref's no-call on the play. First I realized it was a goal-tend after three instant replays. Second, if he called the goal-tend, which was really close, it feels like the equivalent of a questionable shooting foul.

2) The Big East is entertaining as hell because there are 8 good teams, but no really elite teams. Every game (except for St. John's games) is a contest. With that said, I think the BE will be a conference that fails in the Tourney. They will get a group in: Gtown as a 2/3, Lville a 4, UConn a 5, Pitt a 5, Marquette a 6, etc, but I don't see any of them making out of the 32.

3) I am beginning to believe in the East Coast media bias...this is becoming a cliche argument, but as an East Coast/Midwest resident I never really bought into until recently. I think Gtown is the new example that fits the equation...media bias or no media bias they will have fits against teams like KState, Oklahoma, Florida, Arizona State, Standford in the Tourney.

4) I think it's appropriate to say that Jeff Green really was a rare player. On the surface, he was conveniently versatile--deep range, good rebounder, good passer, great in the open court--but I think he made others better. There was a level of productive anxiety in last year's team and I think it comes down to practices with Jeff Green.

I think he challenged Roy, I think he competed hard with Dajuan Summers, and I think he checked Pat Ewing and Vernon Macklin's egos This is speculative, but that level of anxiety is absent in this team. Clearly they miss the surface Jeff Green, but on top of that Summers looks lost, Roy is passive, and there is no other capable alpha-dog on this team to notch it up.

You don't have to have that kinda guy to succeed, but it has been Gtown's mojo.
